Web v Graphic Design / Print Media

Web Design is very different from Graphic Design. The skills required for Web Design are very different to those needed for Graphic Design. Graphic Designers are concerned with communicating a message to customers using very tightly controlled size, colour texture and a design that maximises the use of the space available. In contrast, a Web Designer must communicate your message via variable colours, textures and a design that is not limited to one particular size.

A Web Designer must allow for a flexible design that accounts for different computers, browsers, browser versions and screen resolutions. A successful Web Designer must also, like Graphic Designers, ensure that there is a clarity of communication. This is achieved differently from printed material in that a successful user interface and clarity of navigation does not depend on following a series of pages as web site pages may be accessed "out of order".

Whilst it is possible to create a page that accurately mimics printed material on one browser, the design will not be effective on any other browser. This is why a Web Designer needs to optimise web pages to be accessible on a wide variety of systems.
